UK and EU reach provisional Brexit agreement

14 November 2018 - Kimberly Bakker

The negotiators of the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) on Tuesday 13 November said they had reached a provisional Brexit agreement. British Prime Minister Theresa May will present this plan to her ministers on Wednesday 14 November.

Some details from the concept version have already been leaked. "Sources report that an agreement has been reached on a backstop," correspondent Suse van Kleef said in a statement NOS Radio 1 News† "You can compare this with an insurance policy in case the agreement is not reached on time. This means that the British will temporarily stay in the customs union, so that there is no need to check at the border"

It was previously known that the British because of the Proposed referendum on United Kingdom membership of the European Union €40 billion to pay to the EU. Also, the rights of the 3 million European citizens in the UK (and vice versa the 1 million Britons in the EU) remain fairly similar.

More clarity
There will be more clarity about the draft agreement on Wednesday. The 27 ambassadors from the other European countries will also meet to discuss the state of affairs. Correspondent Tim de Wit informs the NOS that it will be a hell of a job for May to approval from her cabinet. "The deal will determine whether the ministers agree or resign. In the latter case, it will be even more complicated for May."

If the provisional agreement is approved by the cabinet, it must also receive support from the British Parliament, 20 EU Member States (representing 65% of the population) and the European Parliament.

This proves difficult, because several parliamentarians have already expressed negative views about the plans (without seeing the agreement). Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson reiterated fears the UK will become an EU colony and former Secretary of State David Davis calls on Conservative ministers and parliamentarians Tegen to vote the agreement.
