UK House of Commons votes against Brexit deal

15 January 2019 - Kimberly Bakker - 1 reaction

British Prime Minister Theresa May suffered a heavy defeat in the vote on the Brexit deal in the British Parliament on Tuesday 15 January.

The program brexit deal with the European Union (EU) receiving 202 votes in favor and 432 votes against. According to The Telegraph The last time a British Prime Minister suffered such a major defeat was in 1924. "The government listens to the House of Commons", was May's first reaction.

According to various British media, 118 Conservative members, May's party members, voted against the deal with the EU. In addition, several proponents of Brexit indicated that Britain should be prepared to leave the EU without an agreement.

Motion of distrust
The defeat means Prime Minister May's credibility is now gone. That is why Labor, the largest opposition party, has tabled a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister May and her cabinet. This will be debated on Wednesday 16 January.

A big part of her own faction lost all confidence in her in December. Now Parliament has done the same. A Brexit delay or no-deal therefore seem inevitable.
