Roundup banned in France immediately

17 January 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 5 comments

The use of the product 'Roundup Pro 360' is prohibited in France with immediate effect. The French judge ruled that on Tuesday, January 15. The ban on Monsanto's glyphosate-containing product is another blow to Bayer.

The judge's ruling means that the sale of the drug in France must be stopped immediately. According to the French court, various animal experiments have shown, among other things, that the substance is possibly carcinogenic.

Carefully reviewed
It is striking that with this decision the judge comes to a different conclusion than the European Union. Bayer has indicated that it does not agree with the decision of the judge in Lyon. "The product, like all plant protection products, has been carefully evaluated by the French authority ANSES," says the German chemical giant.

However, the judge stated that ANSES did not take sufficient account of the precautionary principle, in particular by not carrying out a specific assessment of the health risks for Roundup Pro 360. The judge relied, among other things, on a study by the World Health Organisation.

New setback
ANSES confirms to Reuters that the drug is immediately banned. This while the authority has yet to assess the judge's ruling. The decision is another setback for Bayer. The company's share price has fallen 1,17% since the ruling.

At the bottom of every crisis lies emotion.

If this becomes European, research into erosion control by means of striptill or direct sowing may be stopped immediately!
If one were to be straight-forward, and therefore also import goods on which roundup is used (almost all crops in the US and South America), this could perhaps be positive for the average Dutch and Belgian farmer.

Hopefully Dutch judges are smarter. There is a drug in the pipeline that can be admitted in 2022
