Agricultural (tech) start-ups are gaining ground

25 January 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

French company Sencrop, which is primarily focused on data-driven agriculture, has raised $10 million to accelerate the company's growth. It is one of the start-ups that is growing fast in the field of precision agriculture and technology.

There are hundreds of (tech) start-ups worldwide that want to do something for agriculture. The majority of these companies want to make the sector more efficient, for example with sensors to use freshwater and energy more efficiently.

Major investors
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, GV (a division of Google) and Monsanto Ventures are active in financing start-ups. Since many companies are active in the agricultural sector, it is important to stay ahead of the competition.

With the above in mind, $10 million for Sencrop is an important step for the company. This allows it to further innovate in the digital field; although Sencrop can no longer really be called a start-up. The company, which has been active in the Netherlands since 2017, is growing fast. There are now more than 5.000 users in Europe.

Specific advice
sencrop supplies, among other things, weather stations and, linked to this, also provides advice for precision agriculture. This information is shared with the various users via a data platform. The data is also used for personalized advice.

Michael Bruniaux, the co-founder of Sencrop, is happy with the amount. "This supports Sencrop in strengthening its international presence and in developing R&D data. The aim is to eventually enable every farmer to benefit from decision-making tools that are becoming increasingly efficient, personalized and adapted to their crops."
