Agri Facts Foundation (STAF) accuses the True Food Price Coalition, which was previously the Animal Protein Reduction Coalition, of spreading lies. The organization therefore requests a rectification within 2 weeks.
According to STAF, the True Food Price Coalition is putting a wrong and distorted image down from the CO2emissions from meat production. The True Food Price Coalition recently published a fact sheet describing the impact of 1 meat tax of €2 per kilo of meat. In it, it says that meat production reduces greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption.
The above is not necessarily incorrect, but the organization also claims that a decrease in meat consumption (-18%) results in 2 billion kilos less greenhouse gases. In addition, it says that 20 billion liters of water will be saved. These data are according to STAFF exaggerated.
Distorted picture
In these calculations, the True Food Price Coalition has assumed consumption of 40,15 kilos per year. These are the figures from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). It then multiplied the figures by the number of inhabitants in the Netherlands (17,3 million), including babies, children, vegetarians, vegans and the very elderly. However, those groups are not taken into account in the RIVM figures.
In addition, the decrease in meat consumption is not compensated by other foods. According to the Agri Facts Foundation, water consumption increases when 1 person adopts a 'balanced vegetarian' diet. That is why STAF says that the True Food Price Coalition overestimates greenhouse gas emissions by 40%, and that there is no water savings with 18% less meat consumption.
