New research into the risks of working with asbestos shows that there are fewer health risks than previously believed. LTO Nederland therefore advocates that farmers should be allowed to remediate their asbestos roofs themselves. According to LTO Nederland, this should bring significant cost savings.
From the research shows, among other things, that the risks of removing asbestos roofs are negligible. The protective measures are not necessary and, above all, are very expensive. TNO, Utrecht University, Radboud University Nijmegen and Crisislab call the current asbestos policy unrealistic.
This is the reason for LTO Nederland to argue for a relaxation of the rules. It estimates the total cost of asbestos remediation in the agricultural sector at €880 million, with everything to be remediated before 2025. Livestock stables and sheds in particular still have asbestos sheets on the roof.
Be guided by realism
The research shows that the removal of these plates hardly poses any health risks. That is why farmers should be given the space to do this job themselves, so says LTO Netherlands. "If the roof owner can remediate his own roof without health risks, then this should be allowed," says Alfred Jansen, portfolio holder Security and Leasehold at LTO Nederland. "We should not be guided by fear, but by realism."
