The number of slaughters at Tönnies has increased in 2018, just like in the 3 previous years. On the other hand, turnover fell, partly due to a high welfare standard and lower meat prices.
The annual figures of Tönnies, which the slaughter group presented on Thursday 14 March, show that the group has slaughtered 200.000 more animals than in 2017. This brings the total number of slaughterings to 20,8 million animals, of which 440.000 are cattle. The majority of the slaughter (16,6 million) takes place on the German market† the home of Tönnies. Compared to 2017, the number of slaughters in that market remained stable last year.
Burden of competition
Tönnies' turnover, on the other hand, decreased by 3,6% to €6,65 billion. The decrease in turnover is mainly due to the lower fattening pig prices in Germany (-12,5%). Tönnies has not disclosed anything about the profit figures.
The company does report that it is experiencing increasing pressure from producers with lower welfare standards. These producers can produce meat at a lower cost price. As an example, the group cites various producers from Spain and the United States.
