British Prime Minister Theresa May has asked the European Union (EU) to postpone Brexit until Sunday 30 June. This is evident from a letter from May to Donald Tusk, the president of the EU, on Wednesday 20 March.
The Brexit date is currently set for Friday, March 29, but it is expected that no agreement has been reached on the conditions of the divorce before that date. That is why May has now requested a postponement of the Brexit, although the request still has to be granted by the other 27 member states of the EU.
The British House of Commons has already given May permission to the EU to uitstel to ask, after its agreement with the EU has already been voted out† Remarkably enough, May writes in the letter to Tusk that she wants to submit her deal one more time to the House of Commons.
'No long delay'
EU heads of government will meet on Thursday 21 March to decide on May's request. On the other hand, some of the government leaders have already hinted that they are not necessarily in favor of a postponement, but that this is better than a hard Brexit. "Brexit postponement is not the solution, but better than a chaotic departure," Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told Business Insider.
If the United Kingdom's request is approved, the British will not have to go to the polls for the European elections in May 2019. This is because the new European Parliament will not be installed until 2 July. May wrote in her letter that she does not want her country to participate in these elections.
