Price difference between organic and conventional is shrinking

25 March 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 2 comments

The price difference between organic and conventional products in the supermarket is shrinking. This is the conclusion of the Consumers' Association after comparing 115 products in 13 supermarket chains and 4 organic shops. In some cases, organic has even become a cheaper alternative.

About 5 years ago you paid on average twice as much for an organic product as for the conventional alternative. This price difference has now shrunk to 2 times. On the other hand, there is a significant difference between the different stores: supermarket chains Dirk and Vomar offer the cheapest organic products, while the natural stores are by far the most expensive.

Price difference of 30%
The differences in the top of the list are relatively small. Organic shops are in many cases more expensive than supermarkets; in the most expensive case it even saves about 30%. However, these stores often have a wider range or more specialized products, for example for people with food allergies.

Nowadays, these organic products are no longer always the most expensive on the supermarket shelf. For example, for organic milk or orange juice you pay less than the standard A-brand. The bulk packaging is also sometimes more favorable than standard packaging.

Organic offer
More than half of all organic products are bought in the supermarket. Aldi and Lidl are not included in the list, because they have too limited a range of organic products. Marqt is the cheapest organic store. The Consumers' Association does not write whether the decreased price difference has to do with the fact that organic products have become cheaper or more expensive.

Chemical gm products are becoming more and more natural
Educate the consumer that the food package will not be 11% of their income, but 40%. Family businesses have the future again

who would want to pay more for that rubbish, I think it is terrible that biological rubbish is allowed to enter the conventional circuit when there is surplus
