House of Commons to debate without May

26 March 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

The British House of Commons decided on Monday evening 25 March to debate Brexit without British Prime Minister Theresa May. This clears the way for a non-binding vote on the various options, such as a renewed referendum.

Of all British MPs, 329 voted for a debate without May; there were 302 votes against this proposal. It means that on Wednesday March 27, there will be debates and votes without May on various scenarios, such as a new referendum. This was a loss for May, as she was against this plan.

May previously said she does not see a third vote on her Brexit deal yet, because there is currently insufficient support in the House of Commons. "I still believe it is the right choice to leave the European Union with a deal, and then on the new date of May 22the prime minister said in a statement.

Remarkably, she is convinced that a majority will eventually vote for her deal. May emphasized that this agreement can no longer be adjusted, and that the House of Commons must realize that it is a compromise.
