Establishing Ministry of Agriculture costs millions

2 April 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

The re-establishment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality has cost €26 million. These costs mainly arise from naming and dividing various tasks, but also arise from the annual costs that a ministry incurs anyway.

About €15 million of all costs was spent on IT. That appears from an investigation of Audit Service Rijk, which is part of the Ministry of Finance. Some of the IT costs go towards adapting software systems, such as changing email extensions.

Changing the names of all ministries in the Netherlands and redistributing tasks between the ministries cost a total of approximately €31,7 million. This means that the re-establishment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality has cost by far the most: €26 million.

New and structural costs
On the other hand, the Ministry of Agriculture also had to give up the multi-year, structural costs: €24 million. These are now counted as new, because the ministry has been re-established after 2 terms of office. This does not apply to the other ministries, which means that the costs of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality may be somewhat distorted.
