British Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Friday 5 April that she wants to postpone Brexit until Sunday 30 June, she writes in a letter to Donald Tusk, the president of the European Union. Tusk, on the other hand, is a true proponent of a flexible deferment.
May indicated Friday 5 April again need more time to reach an agreement on Brexit. In a letter to Tusk, May asks for a postponement until Sunday 30 June. This will probably mean that the United Kingdom will have to participate in the European elections at the end of May.
In the letter to the President of the European Union, May emphasizes that the withdrawal agreement will not be altered† If the House of Commons soon approves the Brexit agreement, the country can withdraw from the European Union before the end of May. There is no need to participate in the elections.
Flexible postponement
Tusk previously stated that he wants to give the United Kingdom more time. "That is why Tusk will submit a proposal for flexible postponement to the European member states on Friday 5 April," a European official reported. OUR† He is in favor of a so-called 'flextention' of a maximum of 12 months. Once the House of Commons in London has reached an agreement on Brexit, the country can leave the European Union. The postponement does not necessarily have to last 1 year.
At the moment it seems that Tusk's plan (flexible deferral) has a good chance of succeeding. All Member States must agree to this. If the latter does not happen, the United Kingdom must leave the European Union on Friday 12 April (without deal).
