The first results of the British municipal elections on Thursday 2 May show that the party of Prime Minister Theresa May and the party of opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn have been severely punished by the British voter. According to British media, this is mainly due to the chaos surrounding Brexit.
About 33% of the votes have now been counted and the first results are not good for May and Corbyn's party. Various British media write that the Conservatives and Labor will face considerable losses. May's party (the Tories) is currently losing more than 200 seats. Corbyn's party has lost more than 50 seats to date.
Chaos due to Brexit
It was already clear in advance that the anger around Brexit would become a theme in these municipal elections. According to British media, the population is done with the arguing around the brexit† This has also caused many problems in the field of education, care and social housing.
It is striking that the opposition party Liberal Democrats, which wants to remain in the European Union, is on the other hand to make a big profit. A total of 8.000 local seats will be allocated and the final result is expected at the end of the day on Friday 3 May.
