Anti-Brexit parties are fighting each other out

14 May 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The hopelessly stalled Brexit process and polls pointing to a majority for opponents: the Remain camp is on paper in a strong position to ensure that the United Kingdom remains in the European Union. That reports Business Insider.

The poor relationship between these parties was revealed last week. The anti-Brexit parties failed to jointly put forward a candidate for the by-elections in the city of Peterborough. In the end, the Liberal Democrats and Greens put forward their own candidate and the new Change UK none at all.

Sabotage campaign
During the  Verkaring Change UK accused the Labor party of seeking to sabotage the campaign. Which makes sense, of course, and raises the question of why the Labor Party wouldn't want to disrupt a rival's campaign. So while they have a chance to run a strong campaign against Brexit (with the same candidate), the Remain parties are mostly fragmenting themselves and maneuvering into a powerless position.

This could seriously break up the pro-European movement with the May 23 European Parliament elections in sight. In many ways, the elections are seen as a referendum to stay in the European Union. A new sounding shows that an alliance of anti-Brexit parties would have accounted for 30% of the vote. But, as things stand, the votes of 'the Remainers' must be divided among Change UK, the Liberal Democrats and the Greens. With a minority for each as a predictable end result.

division
When Change UK was founded in February 2019, many voices were raised to form an alliance with the existing pro-European parties. However, Change UK decided to follow its own course, wrote off the Liberal Democrats and called on their supporters to switch. Instead of votes, Change UK was mostly mocked. Not least by to change name repeatedly, a due to disagreement over the party logo.

With the deeply divided pro-European parties fighting each other, Nigel Farage and his Brexit Party are running away with the loot. Recent polls show Farage's party in the European elections likely to be more than 30% of the votes. Even the idea that Nigel Farage can win the election doesn't stop the pro-European parties from making concessions and cooperating.
