Jan Huitema (VVD) received the most preferential votes of all agricultural spokespersons in the elections to the European Parliament. The liberal and dairy farmer in Makkinga received just more votes than the Christian Democrat Annie Schreijer-Pierik. This is apparent from the provisional final results of the Dutch constituencies.
Various politicians have announced these figures themselves, because the Electoral Council will present the final voting results on Tuesday 4 June. VVD member Huitema, the number 2 on the electoral list for this party in the Netherlands, claimed 115.738 preference votes. That is almost 2.000 votes more than Schreijer-Pierik from Hengeveld, the number 4 of the CDA, who reports 113.914 votes.
The 2 MEPs are remarkably unanimous about the result. Huitema declares on Twitter to be 'slightly overwhelmed'. Schreijer-Pierik throws in a little extra on the social media channel and says he is 'really overwhelmed.'
Final numbers
Bert-Jan Ruissen, the agricultural specialist in the European Parliament for the SGP, is pleasantly surprised with the number of preferential votes he received: 44.416. Ruissen was the leader of the SGP. Huitema, Schreijer-Pierik and Ruissen will return to the European Parliament on the basis of the vote.
