Trump compensates farmers with tons of dollars

31 July 2019 - Wouter Baan - 15 comments

The White House in the United States already announced in May that it will pay $16 billion in damages to the agricultural sector as a result of President Donald Trump's trade wars. Now the distribution key has also been presented. The amounts can amount to 5 tons per agricultural entrepreneur.

Trump also uses market intervention by buying up stocks to boost market prices. US grain, dairy and pork exports have been hit hard in recent months by import duties imposed by China, Mexico and Canada, among others. The countries did this in retaliation for Trump's protectionist trade policies. As a result, (agricultural) market prices in the United States were under heavy pressure.

Max $250.000 for dairy farmers
To compensate, the US government has released a total of $16 billion† Dairy farmers will receive compensation of $0,20 per hundredweight of milk (50,8 kilos), based on historical production figures. For the larger companies, the amount is limited to a maximum of $250.000.

Grain and pig farmers can expect benefits of up to $500.000 per company. Pig farmers receive an amount of $11 per pig. Compensation for grain growers is between $15 and $150 per acre, depending on the state in which they live.

Compensation too low
The damage amounts are paid over 3 installments. Farmers can expect the first payment in August. There are, however, a number of conditions. For example, gross income (in 2015, 2016 and 2017) may not exceed $900.000 and business income must be at least 75% dependent on agricultural activities. Entrepreneurs who have recently retired are not eligible for the compensation.

Advocates in the dairy say that the compensation is a welcome concession, but that the amount is disproportionate to the damage suffered. That is why they are urging the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to quickly end the trade war by signing new treaties.

Buy up stocks
In addition to providing income support to farmers, Trump is also buying up supplies in order to pull market prices out of the doldrums. These products are donated to American school canteens and food banks. He is allocating an amount of almost $1,4 billion for this. More than $200 million of this is spent on buying pork and nearly $70 million is spent on dairy commodities. The purchase program will start from October.

If only we had this president. This left-wing government is destroying everything with those green lies and nonsense

Yes, nothing better than a president who harms your commercial interests and then doesn't compensate for everything, perfect business model for a long-lasting company..
pete s 31 July 2019
He stands up for the interests of his own people and that is not allowed in Europe and certainly not in the Netherlands
As a born hardworking entrepreneur, you are always behind 3-0 here

Expect no compensation for the Mercosur deal, and no compensation for the Ukraine deal, and no compensation for the Russia boycott, etc.
So Trump is not doing so bad, they can learn something from it in the EU.
Geebrand Rustenburg 31 July 2019
A large part of the EU budget goes to the agricultural sector. The question is whether it will be distributed properly. Former minister Veerman has brought in millions for fallow land on his company in France. Too crazy for words. That could have been better spent. Please let Trump. stay there; short term politics is disastrous for the world

You don't have to tell the Americans about modern economics, they are the inventors of it.
Taking initiative is an important part of protecting your own economy, engaging in visionless incoherent politics as happens in the EU will eventually break us weird.
I can understand the English well, sometimes you have to take precious losses to regain room for your own policy.

Better such a president than a milk cooperative that first says that more milk must be produced (China is growing so fast, we can't handle that), then ensures that phosphate rights are granted (because they have too much milk anyway) and then go completely against it again and fully focus on ground-bound.

And then we as farmers are stupid enough not to unite to send those corrupt board members home.
We swallow the weird, twisting reasoning of the board like sweet cake :)
Geebranded 1 August 2019
Short-sighted, the compensation makes it more attractive for Americans to dump their agricultural products in Europe. Trump is a great danger to EU farmers.

Trump is the rescue for EU farmers, among others. Had his opponent won the US elections, the world would have been on fire.

Are these above reactions from farmers entrepreneurs, I can hardly imagine.
What Trump is doing won't last, the American taxpayer is going to fund this mismanagement.

It is also completely inconceivable to me that farmers in the Netherlands can sympathize with Trump's mismanagement. Completely destroying the market and then supporting the incomes with billions is completely crazy and totally unsustainable for more than 1 or 2 years. And then those weird Americans also say that the market has to do its job...
hans 2 August 2019
Realist, is is not a MARKET, not a fixed price per unit of product that is the same worldwide. Every country has its taxes, its subsidies, and the multinationals make the price per country according to the citizen's ability to pay.

Multinationals are not non-profit distribution institutions, no, they make mega profits on the backs of producers, and consumers for that matter.

Trump "protects" his US farmers with billions, just like our EU does. Is that needed?
No, processing can pay much more to farmers, see the mega profits in the sector, and will do so as soon as a shortage, read shrinkage, threatens to arise. The citizen will pay this later.

Only that is what moves governments to intervene ;
Give people bread and games, and you can do whatever you want.

The US farmer doesn't care where the money comes from, at least his freedom has increased under Trump. Regulations have been simplified and there is a strong supporting policy to support the agricultural sector based on practical rules.

If I knew for sure that Trump's policies would be continued for years to come I would definitely go there, it's just rubbish here
