Germany slaughters and produces less

12 August 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

Germany produced about 6 million tons of meat in the first 3,9 months of the year, according to new figures from the German statistical office Destatis. Meat production is therefore lower than in the first half of 2018.

In Germany, 29,4 million animals (total of pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses) were slaughtered in the first half of the year. This has led to a production of 3,9 million tons of meat, including poultry. The figures from Destatis show that this is about 2,6% (102.700 tons) less than in the first half of 2018.

Higher slaughter weight
During the same period, approximately 1,6 million cattle were slaughtered in Germany, which is 21.300 animals less than in the first half of 2018 (-1,3%). However, the higher average slaughter weights mean that the volume of beef produced has increased by 0,7% (-3.700 tons) to 543.300 tons.

The volume of pork in this period amounts to 2,6 million tons, which is 3,7% less (-100.500 tons) than in the first half of last year. In total, 27,2 million pigs were slaughtered in the first half, which is 1,2 million less than last year (-4,3%).

Largest share
The figures also show that pork makes the largest contribution to meat production: 65,8%. This is followed by poultry meat (20%) and beef (13,8%). This is followed by sheep, goat and horse meat, with a combined share of 0,3%.
