The Netherlands must be climate neutral by 2050, King Willem-Alexander stated in his speech from the throne on Tuesday 17 September. "This calls for further sustainability in the agricultural sector." Apart from this remark, there was relatively little attention for farmers.
"To be climate neutral in 2050, the agricultural sector must become even more sustainable," said King Willem-Alexander. The government also strives for a liveable countryside. However, the king did not pay much more attention to the agricultural and horticultural sector, although many matters were mentioned that (in)directly affect the sector.
Nitrogen problem requires an approach
The speech from the throne also referred to the climate plans. This creates a CO2levy for companies and concrete steps are also required from households with regard to the energy transition. The pace must be manageable. For example, there will be an investment fund for homeowners, while the energy tax will also decrease.
King Willem-Alexander also named the nitrogen problem, as a result of the decision of the Council of State. This problem will require an approach and a solution in the coming year. It is also necessary to provide housing construction with an impulse. That is why, for example, the transfer tax for starters is reduced.
Profit Alert
The economic prospects for next year are good, although a phase of more moderate economic growth will then begin. Referring to the approaching Brexit and the trade wars, the king even issued a profit warning.
In summary, King Willem-Alexander formulated 5 priorities for the Dutch government in his Speech from the Throne. These are security, making the economy more sustainable, protecting the rule of law, a realistic climate plan and a fair migration system.
