The European Union and the United Kingdom agreed on the draft Brexit deal today, Thursday 17 October. That write Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, and Boris Johnson, the British Prime Minister, on Thursday.
It is somewhat striking that an agreement has been reached by the negotiators. This is because the chances of a successful deal still dwindled early in the day. That was because the Northern Ireland DUP party said it would not support the deal in this form. It is therefore still unclear whether the agreement can count on support from the British Parliament.
'Equal treatment'
"As things stand, we do not agree," said Arlene Foster and Nigel Dodds, the leaders of the DUP party, on Thursday, October 17. It is particularly important for the Northern Ireland party that Northern Ireland is not treated differently from the rest of the United Kingdom after Brexit.
The party's approval is crucial, because without that support there is no majority in the House of Commons. Johnson's party members are expected to vote against if the party rejects the agreement. The deal still has to be approved by European leaders and the European Parliament has yet to give its opinion.
