Bird flu H5N1 also lands in China

11 February 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

In addition to the coronavirus and African swine fever, China is now also struggling with an outbreak of bird flu. The deadly bird flu H5N1 has been detected in Hunan. This is near Hubei, the epicenter of the coronavirus.

Bird flu has broken out at a farm in Shaoyang City's Shuangqing District. 4.500 of the 7.850 chickens present on the farm have died as a result of the infection. On behalf of the local authority, nearly 18.000 poultry have been culled after the virus outbreak. This is according to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, reports Business Insider.

Contamination on humans
No human infections of H5N1 bird flu have been reported. According to the World Health Organization, contamination on humans is quite rare. In almost all human-to-human cases, contamination is caused by close contact with infected or dead animals. The outbreak does cause concern because this variant of bird flu has a mortality rate of about 60% among infected persons.

The outbreak of this bird flu has come as China is busy controlling the spread of the coronavirus. The coronavirus has killed more than 1000 people, and there are more than 43.000 infections. The Chinese authorities are investigating the corona virus and the source of infections. They are also taking measures to prevent further spread of the virus.
