News Canada trade agreement

Narrow majority for CETA seems in the making

14 February 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 11 comments

CETA, the European trade agreement with Canada, seems to get a narrow majority in the House of Representatives. Although the formal vote is not until next week, it seems that the ChristenUnie also supports the agreement.

This means that the entire coalition of VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie, including independent MP Van Haga, appears to be in favor of ratification. All other opposition parties are against the deal. However, final approval is still far from certain, because the proposal must also be discussed by the Senate. There, the cabinet does not have a majority by far.

In the discussion of the agreement in the House of Representatives last Wednesday and Thursday, the key was mainly with the ChristenUnie. The cabinet needs the support of the Christian party, which is also a member of the coalition. But the ChristenUnie wanted more guarantees from Sigrid Kaag, the Minister of Foreign Trade.

The party fears unfair competition for Dutch farmers and wants Canada to fully comply with European food safety and animal welfare requirements. However, Kaag guaranteed that no Canadian hormone meat would end up on the Dutch shelves, emphasizing that much of what is said and written about CETA is an incomplete outline of its content and consequences.

LTO Netherlands has previously expressed support for CETA. Other farmers' organizations such as the NAV (arable farming) and NMV (dairy farming) are but firmly against.

LTO and "Christian" parties for, that can only be a Judas agreement.

LTO is in favor of NAV and NMV against.
Unity among the agricultural promoters is also hard to find.

The tension surrounding the vote in the House of Representatives is greater than the fuss about food safety.

Because of the coalition agreement, the CU has swallowed a bitter pill. Anyone who has followed the debate can only conclude that Voordewind put forward artificial reasons for agreeing to agree on conditions (which are not a bad thing, because the present treaty is unshakable and does not tolerate side letters). He falls through the basket here.
But what was the alternative? The commitment Kaag made only related to 'better' food safety control, not to the unlevel playfield or the regulatory burden associated with circular agriculture. The latter is also the case within Europe with open borders and consumers who first look at the price.
Rutte would vote for CETA in the European Council, because large companies and industry should of course not be put in the way.
The fact that LTO is ahead raises the question of who it represents.
A number of years ago, LTO also did the same with regard to TTIP: members were not asked anything at all and, if they were already mentioned, they were misinformed.
While it concerns fundamental questions that do not really contribute to a better income for the farmer of which the politicians are talking. But meanwhile.......
Time for long-term action? Brussels does not lose sleep over it and is pulling the strings.
We are in the wrong EU!

Agricultural collective dump LTO!

As an employer organization, Lto is at the negotiating table via the country collective, fdf may have a contribution, no more and no less

Christen Unie has just helped CETA to obtain a minimum majority in the House of Representatives. The farmers in this country have to practice marginal circular agriculture. How crooked and unfair do you want it to be. The revenue model that should be linked to circular agriculture has already been given away before we even started. Gone motivation!

CU/Schouten does what they want, but they don't have 'it' in charge after all. Until Sunday there is no need to show 'normal' behaviour.

We know turning behavior from D66/PvdA, GL is communism. Those are clear.

That eternal ointment of CDA/CU is abhorrent.
Note again: CDA asks a few critical questions in the nitrogen debate because they have been with the farmers, but will soon simply 'blow' with every (other) political wind. Any form of accountability to a starting point or voter is totally unimportant.
'Believe' that.

(aside) seen that survey about those other believers?: shit on the law, shit on unbelievers: THAT'S FAITH!!!

Everything is destroyed by an unproven fairy tale.

This thread is about CETA not about nitrogen or something like that. I don't understand what you are saying here about the CDA and CU. The CDA has been pro from the start. I also find it very uncomfortable that Voordewind had to play like that (forced and against my own wishes). That is sometimes the fate of coalition partners. Everyone has to add a good splash of water to the wine once in a while. Schouten has a limited role in this.

but about your response:
“Everything breaks on an unproven fairy tale.”

you ahead?

why so sour? why make life so hard on yourself???!!! †
