President Donald Trump is allocating an additional $1 billion to buy up food supplies intended to help poor Americans through the corona crisis.
At the start of the corona crisis, Trump already pulled out a lot of money. Between April and June, $3 billion has already been released for the purchase of food supplies, which the program is called: 'Farmers to Families Food Box program'. The food stocks that are being bought up would initially be destined for the catering industry, which is purchasing less volume due to the corona crisis.
The president announced the budget increase yesterday (Aug. 24) around the Republican party's convention that takes place this week in Charlotte, North Carolina. After the convention ended, Trump, flanked by daughter Ivanka and Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, visited a food distribution center further upstate, promising extra money.
Presidential elections
In the run-up to the presidential election that takes place in November, the extra money is conveniently timed. This will probably make the president popular among the population and his peasant base. Skeptics say the money is not going to the right place.
