Bird flu of the highly pathogenic variant H5 was diagnosed on a farm with broiler breeders in Altforst, Gelderland. The stables with a total of 35.700 animals are being cleared, the Ministry of Agriculture reported on Thursday.
There are no other companies within a radius of 1 kilometer around the company. In the area of 3 kilometers around the infected farm in Altforst are 9 other poultry farms. These companies are sampled and examined for bird flu, the ministry reports. There are also 10 other poultry farms in the 25-kilometre zone around this company. The transport ban applies to this zone.
The transport ban concerns poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used litter, but also other animals and animal products from poultry farms. Nationally, the existing hygiene protocol for visitors to visit commercial poultry farms is being expanded. This means, among other things, that visitors are only allowed to enter the stable or yard after taking strict hygiene measures.
National confinement obligation
Exactly one week ago, Carola Schouten, Minister of Agriculture, announced a national obligation to keep poultry for all commercially kept poultry. This happened after the discovery of dead mute swans that were found to be infected with bird flu type H5N8.
In addition to this mandatory confinement, zoos, petting zoos and owners of hobby birds are obliged to screen their poultry and waterfowl so that these animals do not come into contact with wild waterfowl and their droppings. Zoos and petting zoos can be visited, the ministry reports. Furthermore, a ban has been imposed on the display of ornamental poultry and waterfowl.
