The jury of the Boerenbusiness Award has nominated 4 companies with their product or service for the Agribusiness Award 2020. In the coming period they will introduce themselves and the product to you. Today MSD Animal Health with the Porcilis Lawsonia vaccine against the PIA bacteria in pigs.

Marleen van Sleuwen, marketing manager Swine at MSD, received the nomination last Monday afternoon, accompanied by colleagues Ton Jacobs, Ramon Pauwels and Lisanne Houben. "We are very happy with this nomination. It is a nice compliment to the result after almost 20 years of product development."

"There are several advantages to this vaccine. It not only brings more job satisfaction, it also leads to better growth and feed conversion in piglets and pigs, which means that the pig farmer can save costs. The vaccine has been adopted quite quickly by pig farmers, which shows that there is a need was on. The first satisfied customers have already registered."

Preventive vaccine for PIA bacteria
MSD Animal Health focuses on innovative solutions that contribute to improving animal health. The vaccine also contributes to this. It is the first injectable vaccine against the PIA bacteria. "The great thing about our vaccine is that it is injected and can be dissolved in our vaccine against circo and mycoplasma by means of a pill. This makes it less labour-intensive and the piglets and pigs need to take fewer injections."

"We are very pleased that the vaccine has been so well received, as it has only been on the market for a relatively short time," said Van Sleuwen. "Before we officially launched it on the market, we already got the demand from pig farmers when it would become available. This shows that there was enthusiasm for it, which we now see in sales. Field research with several pig farmers shows that the vaccine In general, fewer losses, better feed conversion, better growth and less antibiotic use are registered on the farms. As a result, there are also economic benefits to the vaccine, it can yield 8 – 9 euros per fattening pig."

The jury also sees market potential in this product: "It is an important health problem in pig farming. Returns for the farmer and market potential for the vaccine therefore appear to be guaranteed," said jury chairman Aalt Dijkhuizen.
