It's that time again: the annual publication of the 'Quote 500'. The ranking of the wealthiest Dutch people this year counts more than 60 agricultural entrepreneurs, with the fishing and animal feed industry continuing to do well, as every year. Striking is that there is only 1 newcomer this year. Who are the agricultural millionaires of the Netherlands?
If we look at the top 25 agricultural millionaires in the Netherlands, there is little difference with last year† At the top is still Wijnand Pon, in 13th place with a capital of approximately €2 billion. Where he originally started in dairy cattle and breeding, the majority of his estimated wealth now comes from the car industry. You can no longer call him a real agricultural millionaire. The next real agricultural millionaire is Alicia Fentener-Van Vlissingen of SVH (Nutreco). This most wealthy Fentener-Van Vlissingen is in 45th place, with a net worth of €795 million. The rest of the family follows in places 46, 72, 81 and 82, with assets between €490 and €795 million. The assets of the Fentener-Van Vlissingen family have remained stable for years, making them a permanent fixture in the Quote 500.
Not only the animal feed industry is doing well, because good money is also made in the fishing industry. Diek Parlevliet (Parlevliet & Van der Plas) rose from 67th place to 60th place this year, with an estimated capital of €600 million (in 2019 this was €540 million). Together with Jan van der Plas, in 61st place with a capital of €600 million, he achieved a profit of €124 million last year. This, of course, contributed to its solid growth on the list. In addition, Annerieke Vrolijk (of Cornelis Vrolijk) has also risen sharply in the ranking: from 87th place to 73rd place. Her assets are now estimated at €530 million, compared to €2019 million in 450.
Only 1 newcomer
It is striking that the ranking of agricultural millionaires this year only has 1 newcomer: Ronald Boers. With assets of around €125 million, the former owner of greenhouse construction company BOAL Group is in 377th place. Boers sold the company 2 years ago to the British Equistone Partners Europe, after which he was able to sell his shares for a nice amount. As a result of that move, he comes just above Piet Brokking, who is in place 378 with a net worth of about €125 million. Jan Anker is also slightly below that, in place 392 (with an estimated capital of €120 million). Jan Anker has also done better business, because where Brokking realizes a growth of 0%, Anker manages to grow his estimated capital by 14%.
At the bottom of our agricultural millionaires list we find Diederik and Dennis Vergeer (cheese) in 490th place, with an estimated wealth of €96 million. The estimated assets of the brothers have increased considerably in 1 year: + €8 million. Pretty good for a second year in the Quote 500. Peter and Paul Koppert (crop protection) is still slightly above that, in place 485. The wealth of the owners of the company of the same name is estimated at €97 million. Gerjhan Roerink, who entered the list for the first time last year, drops to place 341 this year. His assets, on the other hand, have remained the same at €140 million.
Most Wealthy Families
Every year Quote also publishes a top 50 of the wealthiest families in the Netherlands. In this we again see the De Heus family as the first. The estimated wealth of the family is €1,4 billion and that is good for a fifth place in the top 50. The family rises 3 places. The Van Drie family also does good business and records an estimated wealth of € 1,2 billion. The Van Ballegooijen family was still in 49th place last year, but has disappeared from the list this year.

It seems that the most important function of the Dutch farmer is to facilitate the earnings model for the periphery. We are not allowed to receive the financial profit, but society's criticism of the production method is.
Taking so many risks to create money and employment for others. It's actually madness.
Judging by the list, the agricultural sector is suffocating with free-riding millionaires.
