PepsiCo has doubled its climate target. It means that the company aims to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions by more than 40% by 2030. This target was previously set for the year 2040. For that year there is now a plan to achieve net zero emissions.
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030% by 40. That is the goal PepsiCo has set itself. This doubles the climate target. The company also plans to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040. That is a decade earlier than required by the Climate Agreement. “The impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent and we all need to do our part to accelerate the changes needed to address this problem,” said Ramon Laguarta, chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, in a press release.
Concrete plans
Specifically, the company has set itself the target of reducing absolute GHG emissions from direct activities by 2030% by 75 and those from the indirect value chain by 40%. “As agriculture is responsible for approximately 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 33% of PepsiCo's emissions, we have decided to contribute more to sustainable agriculture.” According to the company, this includes improved soil health, biodiversity and less deforestation.
Another way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is the goal of using less plastic and increasing the proportion of recycled material. And, finally, through the implementation and improvement of the environmentally sustainable production, storage, transport and distribution locations, it strives for maximum efficiency in the supply chain.
