Brits most appreciate the farmer

8 February 2021 - Kimberly Bakker

In the United Kingdom, the agricultural sector is highly valued, more than anywhere else in the world. That's according to a new survey from YouGov. The profession of scientist and that of doctor are at the top of the list worldwide, probably fueled by the corona pandemic.

Research of YouGov among more than 22.000 inhabitants from 16 different countries shows that the profession of scientist and the profession of doctor are the most valued. In other words, the respondents would be happiest if one of their children were to practice this profession in the future. That is not necessarily surprising, given that the world is still under the spell of the corona pandemic. Lawyer, teacher and architect are also professions that can count on considerable appreciation worldwide.

Brits appreciate the farmer
If we look at the profession of agricultural entrepreneur, the British value this field the most. More than 47% of respondents say they would be happy if one of their children wanted to become a farmer, compared to a global average of 23%. The United Kingdom is followed by Sweden and Australia. In contrast, China and Spain have the least appreciation for agricultural entrepreneurs.

According to Mark Bridgeman, the president of the Country Land and Business Association in the United Kingdom, the Brexit and corona crisis have challenged the food supply like never before. "It makes consumers realize how important the UK agricultural sector is."

At the bottom of the list are the occupations of miner, truck driver, call center worker and factory worker.
