China remains an important market for the Netherlands

11 February 2021 - Kimberly Bakker

In 2019, the Netherlands earned approximately €4,6 billion from the export of goods of its own making to China. This is shown by new figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Agricultural machines, baby milk powder and meat from the Netherlands are particularly popular with the Chinese.

The export of home-made goods to China yielded approximately €2019 billion in 4,6 for the Netherlands. This is an increase of 53% compared to 2015. In that year turnover amounted to €3 billion. The Chinese mainly bought more machines and foodstuffs from us. For example, the Netherlands has earned more than €1,3 billion from the export of machines and parts, including agricultural machinery.

Statistics Netherlands also expects total exports to China to be even higher over the past year. This is because the export value over the first three quarters of 2020 is already higher than in the same period a year earlier.

Baby milk powder and meat also popular
In addition to machines, baby milk powder and meat were also popular with the Chinese in 2019. Export earnings from food preparations, such as baby milk powder, amounted to €278 million in that year. That is more than double compared to 2015. Baby milk powder specifically amounts to a share of 22% of the total export.

Meat was in third place in the top 10 of exports to China, with an export value of €469 million. This is a threefold increase compared to 2015. This may be due to the fact that the Chinese pig herd was severely curtailed in 2019 due to the outbreaks of African swine fever.

Average Earnings
On average, the Netherlands earned €0,57 on every euro that was exported to China. That is more than average in relation to the total export of Dutch manufacture (€0,54), but less than in 2015 (€0,60). This means that per euro of exports to China, approximately €0,03 more imports of goods or services are needed than in 2015.
