'Nature organizations collect half of farmers' support'

12 February 2021 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 19 comments

Nature organizations Brabants Landschap and Natuurmonumenten have received several million euros in EU agricultural subsidies in recent years. That tax money from Brussels was actually intended as income support for tenant farmers. This reports Follow the Money.

The conservationists, who are also lessees, stipulated in 2015 that farmers who lease natural land should transfer half of the EU subsidies. Brabants Landschap has received €4 million in EU agricultural subsidies in 1,5 years, reports Follow the Money.

Natuurmonumenten does not keep track of how much EU money it has received via tenants, but based on data from Natuurmonumenten, Follow the Money calculated that it must be at least €1,3 million per year. "That could be," said Natuurmonumenten about that calculation.

Transfer half of subsidies
The practice is permitted in a liberalized lease contract – although the Arnhem Lease Chamber decided at the end of 2018 that payment rights accrue to the lessee. The tenants themselves have agreed to the condition that they must transfer half of the subsidy. But farmers who spoke to Follow the Money said they saw no real choice. "If you protest too much, you just won't get the ground," says Dries van Rozen of tenants' union BLHB.

Natuurmonumenten defends the practice. "We cannot justify to our members and to nature for not renting out in line with the market. The market wants to pay for this." Brabants Landschap states that tenant and lessor both benefit from this method.

This is in response to it Boerenbusiness article:

these organisations, Natuurmonumenten and Brabant landscape have certainly not heard of corporate social responsibility, money is a pain and the farmer is tied with hands and feet because without the soil he ends up in a negative spiral for his business operations (more intensively, exactly what the government does not want). this is similar to the milking that happens in the city, but in the countryside.

this is bizarre, if a housing cooperative were to demand half of the rent subsidy, questions would be asked about it in parliament and the world would be too small, it is pure bread robbery and further murdering the farmer

According to its latest annual accounts, Natuurmonumenten has invested capital of 176 million and manages 100.000 hectares, of which 25.000 hectares have been given free of charge by the government. In addition, they will receive a further 47 million in subsidy for their maintenance and money from the postcode lottery. And to still collect the income support from their tenants is really too bizarre for words.

they are just commercial companies that like to speak negatively about agriculture in order to then become financially better banned themselves, has nothing to do with sustainability or the environment, just take a look at what kind of thick diesel pickups they drive!

Well expressed Jantje, but what do they do about the environment that they are talking about, they manage 100.000 ha and do not supply any export product for our Netherlands and contribute nothing to export revenues, they could have been the first to create solar parks to do something positive for society. I think that these kinds of organizations are obliged to make a positive contribution to the subsidies they receive every year (unjustly). It is already a scandal that people are not allowed to make massive use of the hiking trails of these organizations, especially now in corona time, no we are working on obtaining as much money as possible from subsidies and making life miserable for tenants by imposing all kinds of heavy rules and payments. scandalous organisations, but the public does not see it and that is the majority who are not aware of any of this. And we farmers have to show that citizen everything to keep our image high.

Too ridiculous for words : The union of land tenants, together with the LTO, are constantly eating the cheese of the bread.! The nature organizations have even managed to obtain many times more subsidy with much less hectares than, for example, the LTO.! .Source : 2015. (Starting point - Hektares Netherlands : 4.154.302.).
Namely the total amount of subsidy provided to .Natuurmonumenten, Staatsbosbeheer, Provincial Landscape
administrators : Total surface = 581602 hectares. † Total subsidy amount = € 1.100.000.000,00. † Subsidy amount per hectare = € 1.891,33. † Dutch Agriculture : Total area = 2243323 hectares. † Total subsidy amount = € 500.000.000,00. † Subsidy amount per hectare = € 222,88. .Overlooking everything completely, the final conclusion is; Too ridiculous for words.!

By the way, the invested capital is in shares, land has not yet been taken into account.

if I read the comments above, and the numbers of “info and Henk” are correct.
Then I am very surprised that this is not shared in The Hague, or at least in the national media.
let's face it here in this medium it's only for a limited audience.

Read Syp Wynia's column in Wyniasweek.nl. From 1989 to 2020, Natuurmonumenten received no less than 435.5 million euros from the postcode lottery.

We can still tell the truth here. Those who say this should be in the paper are always on the side with their hands in their pockets.
(afraid they will slip or fall through the ice)
It is certain that many euros will be lost.

If you want to have some public influence, a national newspaper has something to add, BB is hardly read by any citizen.

Can't even raise this issue with the national newspapers, certainly in the interest of the economy that such abuses come to the fore. Just let a parliamentary committee get on with it, if we don't have an earmark in it, when an NVWA hits the dam, the whole world will be turned upside down and you won't avoid a fine.
