Sugar trading house Limako taken over by Cosun

June 8, 2021 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

Since May, Cosun Beet Company has become the full owner of the international trading house Limako. Cosun has acquired the remaining 49% of the shares of ED&F Man, the cooperative company reported today (Tuesday 8 June).

Limako was founded in 1968 as a joint venture with ED&F Man (one of the largest sugar traders in the world) to sell European sugar surpluses on the world market. This task has been expanded in recent years to include other activities.

Limako imports sugar when the market is tight and has therefore specialized in international container transport in order to be able to deliver sugar on time to customers anywhere in the world. The company also translates market and price developments into concrete options for partners and Limako advises on hedging price risks. "We are now a dynamic international trading house that, with its knowledge and experience, can respond quickly to harvest fluctuations in Europe," says Daniël Kerkhof Managing Director of Limako. "We open up high-quality and strategic sales markets outside the EU, with which we can absorb large volume fluctuations in Europe".

International ambitions
"With our ambition to further internationalize, it was our desire to become the full owner of Limako," said Paul Mesters, CEO of Cosun Beet Company in the message. "We want to be free, in accordance with our strategy and vision, to chart our own course on the world market. With Limako as the spearhead. Through 100% ownership we can better bring our ideas to full bloom".

Mesters emphasize that Limako will continue to operate as an independent trading house. ED&F Man will remain an international business partner for both Limako and Cosun after the acquisition. To this end, a new cooperation agreement has been concluded between the companies.
