NVWA closes Gosschalk after new violations

2 July 2021 - Linda van Eekeres - 7 comments

The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has closed Exportslachterij Gosschalk with immediate effect, after discovering new animal welfare violations in recent days.

On Monday, RTL released images showing pigs and cows being mistreated. McDonald's immediately stopped purchasing meat from the slaughterhouse. The slaughterhouse approval of the slaughterhouse is now suspended. This means that the company has to stop the slaughter process for the time being. The certificates of competence are also revoked from the slaughterhouse employees who have committed a serious animal welfare violation.

New facts
In recent days, the NVWA has identified new animal welfare violations based on the on-site surveillance and the images received from Pigs in Distress. "These new facts, together with the feeling in society about the animal suffering that was visible in the images shown, are reason for the NVWA to suspend the slaughter process for the time being," the NVWA said in a message. Other activities of the company that do not involve working with live animals can continue.

The slaughterhouse must now first draw up a thorough plan of action on how to guarantee animal welfare and what an acceptable slaughter speed is. Based on this, the NVWA assesses whether the company can guarantee animal welfare in the future.

Criminal investigation
There is also a criminal investigation into Export Slaughterhouse Gosschalk. This is carried out by the NVWA's Intelligence and Investigation Service, in close consultation with the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Public Prosecution Service.

animal cruelty is of course not acceptable, but McDonald's is now pretending to bleed their noses, but they will put maximum pressure on every supplier to deliver as cheaply as possible and then act hypocritical now, but that's how it works in this society

As a pig farmer, I am certainly not going to justify the images, but I think that the political representatives take these measures very quickly and too easily
if they are so consistent, they should take a look in the rearview mirror to see how people were beaten out of the Vondelpark by the police or the mental abuse of all those people in the allowance affair.....it's just an opinion!

Those slaughterhouses are also very hypocritical, they sit down together with the retail sector to discuss new concepts for a 'better' yield price for farmers. This often results in wishes and requirements that ensure that the farmer has to invest in animal welfare, which is what the consumer wants. And what do the slaughterhouses even care about their margin. So the farmer has to invest in animal welfare and once the pigs have arrived at the slaughterhouse, the same slaughterhouse has suddenly forgotten what the consumer's wishes are. If we want to have a meaningful future in the Netherlands as a farmer, we must move towards a chain in which all parties actually contribute something instead of just skimming the profit.
