A quarter of the agricultural and horticultural companies generate three quarters of the total turnover in the sector. The 37% smallest companies only account for 2,6% of the turnover. This is evident from new figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
The total turnover of agricultural and horticultural companies in 2021 will come according to provisional figures from the CBS out at €25 billion. Last year, turnover was €44,1 million higher. The number of companies was also larger then: 52.695 compared to 52.120 this year. This includes the so-called 'hobby farmers'. In 2000 there were still 97.390 agricultural and horticultural companies.
25% of agricultural and horticultural companies each have a turnover of €500.000 or more. Together they account for 75% of the (standardized) turnover (€18,7 billion). 1.085 companies (2,1%) have a turnover of more than €3 million on their books. In total they account for 27% of the total revenue. The 37% smallest companies account for only 2,6% of the turnover. These smallest companies have 240.000 hectares of land, 13,3% of the total agricultural area.
If you zoom in to specific sectors, this picture translates into a smaller proportion of companies having by far the most turnover. For example, 20% of the largest arable farms (with a turnover from €250.000) book 68% of the turnover in the arable sector. 21% of grazing livestock companies have a turnover from €500.000. They account for 55% of the total turnover.
