The year 2017 started so well with a sharp rise in the Countus Arable Farm Index. But in week 5, the uptrend suddenly bends. The reason for this is a reduction in the seed potato price and later in February the potato price also falls slightly.
Week 5 2017 can be entered as a record week with 197.20 points. This is the highest number of points since the start of the index in 2004. This was mainly due to the seed potato price, which is at an extremely high level. The potato price also managed to maintain a stable high level. But once at the top the only way is down and so does the index.
A week later, the index fell by 14 points under pressure from the seed potato price. However, seed potatoes remain at the same level at all times. The fact that the index continues to lose points is therefore due to the potato price.
From a good 25 euros per 100 kg, the price decreases towards 23, 20 and at the end of February even 19 euros. But there is improvement, because the price is now around 22 euros again.
Not much is happening on the fodder wheat and onion markets. Feed wheat moves between 178 and 180 euros per tonne. Onions still do not exceed 6 euros per 100 kg.
