McCain invests 114 million euros in British chip factory

14 March 2017 - Niels van der Boom

McCain Foods promises to put 100 million pounds, converted 114 million euros, into its British chip factory. The factory is located in the coastal town of Scarborough, in the north of England. The chips factory has been processing potatoes for almost 50 years and will continue to do so for decades to come.

The company will upgrade existing machinery at the plant, which produces other frozen chips and other frozen potato products, to increase capacity. Money is also being invested in measures to reduce harmful emissions to the environment. As a third point, a biodigester is being built to ferment residual waste into biogas.

74

employees

may lose their job

The news comes a week after McCain announced it will lay off employees. Which writes the English newspaper Yorkshire Evening Post. Currently, it looks like 74 employees will lose their jobs. This capital injection therefore does not have a positive effect on job retention.

Corporate affairs director Bill Bartlett said the investment is necessary to meet growing demand for French fries and potato products. This requires more capacity, according to Bartlett. Work will start this summer and the renovated location should be fully operational in three years' time.
