Bad potato harvest

Japanese stop potato chips production

14 April 2017 - Kimberly Bakker

Japanese snack producers have temporarily stopped production of a number of potato chips flavors because the potato crop in Hokkaido (Japan) has largely failed.

This announcement, from snack producer Calbe and Koike-ya, caused a real run on the chips in supermarkets, among others.

Offered via the internet
Calbe's pizza chips are so popular that even bags are offered on the internet for more than 11 euros. That is 6 times more than the original price. There are many pictures of empty shelves on Twitter.

Not just the chips industry
According to experts, the crisis will not only be felt by snack makers. It is expected that restaurants and fast food chains will also be affected by the poor potato harvest and the resulting potato shortage.

Calbe did indicate that he was considering the import of potatoes. Koike-ya does not and stays true to the Japanese potato. Neither of the 2 dared to predict when chip production will return to full throttle.
