Large raw material requirement

Netherlands import country for potatoes

22 April 2017 - Niels van der Boom - 3 comments

The Dutch potato industry imported considerably more potatoes in March, compared to one year ago. The import level is more than 34.000 tons higher for ware potatoes. In addition, less product was exported, almost 7.200 tons less. This is apparent from the most recent figures published by the Netherlands Potato Organization (NAO).

In March, a total of 147.358 tons of potatoes were imported by the Netherlands. Of this, almost 19.000 tons were starch potatoes. The level is 34.215 tons higher for ware potatoes and 2.972 tons for starch potatoes. In addition, 77.000 tons of product were exported in the 31 days of March. Last year that level was 84.200 tons.

More to Belgium
More product was sold, especially in Europe. Exports to Africa actually decreased. America and Asia are stable markets. The export of potatoes to Belgium amounted to 35.240 tons in March. This means that the total export to our southern neighbours, up to and including March, is almost 29.000 tons higher than in the first 3 months of 2016. Germany bought fewer potatoes. The United Kingdom bought 7.500 tons more product. Exports to Switzerland increased from 2.300 tons to 6.450 tons in the period between January and March.

African exports have decreased by almost 10.800 tons up to and including March, compared to last year. Senegal and Mauritania both bought less potatoes. As before written Ivory Coast is the largest grower. The country was good for 1.673 tons in March. It thus exported almost 3 tons in 16.000 months. Last year it was 11.000 tons.
