Planting season in the Netherlands went smoothly

25 April 2017 - Niels van der Boom

The planting of ware potatoes in the Netherlands went very smoothly this spring. This is evident from figures from Aviko Potato. In the north of the Netherlands, about a quarter still has to go into the ground. Of Western Europe, Belgium still has the most potatoes to plant.

Planting went very well this spring. That shows the planting progress by Aviko Potato. This makes the start of the season comparable to that of early 2014. Almost all potatoes have been planted in eastern Flevoland, the Limburg border area and the Betuwe. In the Northern Netherlands and the Achterhoek, about a quarter still had to go into the ground at the start of this week.

85 percent difference
The spring of 2017 is well ahead of that of 2016 and 2015. The differences are sometimes enormous. No less than 85 percent for, for example, southern Flevoland. For the Noordoostpolder this is about 75 percent. Planting work is also well advanced in Emsland, Germany. About 85 percent is currently planted there. All in all, a lot was planted in week 15 in all regions.

Abroad leads the way
The work is also in the final phase in the German Rhineland and Bavaria. Just like the French Picardy and Nord-Pas-de-Calais, 90 to 95 percent of all potatoes are already in the ground. A lot of work was done in one week. Great Britain is almost at 80 percent. In almost all cases, the countries are ahead of the previous 3 years.

Flanders vs Wallonia
In Belgium there is a noticeable difference between West Flanders and Wallonia. The former region had nearly 16 percent of the potatoes in the ground at the end of week 90, while Wallonia is still at 80 percent. That is still considerably more than in 2016. Then the Walloon growers were less than 10 percent.

Britain
According to AHDB Potato, about 22 hectares of potatoes were in the ground on April 71.000. That is 37.000 hectares more than in the same week of 2016. The difference with 2005 is smaller: approximately 5.000 hectares.
