New harvest at the end of May

Japanese chip shortage reaches crisis point

2 May 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The chip shortage in Japan is reaching crisis point. Consumers try to grab what is still available in the supermarkets and manufacturers have difficulty obtaining raw materials. That writes Asian Review.

At the beginning of April, the two largest chip factories in the country had already shut down production for most variants quiet† They cannot say when they will restart production. The crisis is the result of the bad harvest and the new harvest will not be available until the end of May.

New harvest is only here at the end of May

Strict import requirements
Japan keeps the border fairly closed for agricultural products, which also applies to potatoes. Manufacturers do import potatoes, but the strict requirements regarding adhering soil make importing difficult.

The import of potatoes only started in 2006, under pressure from the United States.
