Top 5 Boerenbusiness

Where does seed potato cultivation change the most?

10 May 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

In 5 years, the acreage of seed potatoes in some municipalities in the Netherlands decreased drastically, while in other cultivation areas the crop was growing. Exactly what the shifts look like, the 'Top 5 of Boerenbusiness' in picture.

The largest percentage decline in acreage between 2011 and 2016 is attributable to the municipalities of Weststellingwerf, Zeewolde, Goeree-Overflakkee and Bronkhorst. In an absolute sense, this means that Zeewolde loses the most seed potato soil: in 2011, 290 hectares of seed potatoes were still being cultivated, in 2016 this was 201. About 7 companies gave up on cultivation.

More companies, less acreage
It is striking that 5 farms were added on Goeree-Overflakkee, but the acreage fell by 63 hectares: from 216 hectares in 2011 to 153 in 2016. The average number of hectares per company in this municipality is therefore at a relatively low level.

A municipality where seed potato cultivation was expanded considerably is Eemsmond, which gained 5 hectares of seed potatoes in 329 years. This puts the municipality in third place in the top 5. Three new companies contributed to this. Another strong seed potato municipality is De Marne, which can add 3 hectares and 289 companies. This municipality is fourth in the overall standings.

NOP at the top
The Noordoostpolder is still at the top with a growth of 8 companies and 262 hectares to 7.165 hectares and in 2016 and 407 companies. Compared to cultivation year 2015 however, the total number of hectares has decreased slightly: 7.278 hectares.

The second largest seed potato municipality is Hollands Kroon. Despite the fact that 10 companies stopped producing seed potatoes, the surface area expanded by 120 hectares. The largest seed potato growers are located in Loppersum. Last year the average surface area per company was 44 hectares. That is more than the 37 hectares in 2011.
