Futures market turnover has never been so large

10 May 2017 - Niels van der Boom - 11 comments

Never before has the European Energy Exchange (EEX) converted so many potato futures contracts for April. The open positions account for a volume of more than 110.000 tons of potatoes. The April contract is the most important in the sales season for chips potatoes.

In total, this concerns 4.411 open positions on the potato futures market in Leipzig, which have been settled. Together these are good for 110.275 tons of potatoes. The highest volume ever for the April contract. According to the EEX, this underlines that the participants have a lot of confidence in the potato futures market.

7 cents times 40 tons is 2.800 per hectare. is indeed something different than 1 billion per factory

Too many sales contracts, without a buyer

there is almost no turnover on the futures market in potatoes, have a look at the grain futures market converting more than 10.000 contracts per day is normal and then another 50 t0n each. potato futures market is dying.

there is more wheat in europe than potato, and there is way too many different buyers in wheat market than potato market, and most importantly, there is much more optimism by wheat growers than potato grower

Yes, but farmer, they are sold on the TM anyway and so there is a buyer or am I seeing that wrong?

Clic contracts are different per customer, you can often start clicing in July, August until a certain agreed moment (often max 25 tons per ha)

There are also contracts with participation on the last CS of April.
That is why everything is done to get the CS of April as low as possible.

Knocks like a bus. The brokers claim that the potato futures market is working fine. In fact, there is now also a system of clicking for the grains. Great for trade and brokers, very bad for arable farmers.

You don't have to click with a click contract. You can also settle on Cash Settlement, seems to be the best option at the moment. You should only click if it makes you happy. When the winter futures market was manipulated below the daily market, I stopped clicking, I'll see how it plays out at the time of delivery later in June.

That's why there was so much pressure on the futures market in April to buy all those click contracts nice and low against Cash Settlement. And I didn't know you could click until June. Explains why the futures market now has to go down again while the daily market is rising.
