Canada potato acreage hardly changes again

The Canadian potato area in 2017, with 141.000 hectares, is comparable to that of previous years. In both 2014 and 2016, the final acreage amounted to slightly more than 140.000 hectares.

The potato area for the coming season has not yet been completely determined. Due to the delayed planting season, especially in eastern Canada, there is a chance that growers will make some changes to their crop plans.

Stable income provides little reason for large fluctuations

Most potatoes are grown on Prince Edward Island (PEI), with 36.000 hectares. They are followed by Manitoba with 26.000 hectares and Alberta with 21.000 hectares. The areas in the various major potato states have been at the same level for years.

Apparently, the large share of fixed price contracts and the generally stable income give little reason for large fluctuations in potato cultivation.
