The Polish potato grower, like his Western European colleagues, is looking forward to this season again. This is apparent from the depiction of the area.
The final area was set in 2016 at more than 310.000 hectares. That will be 10.000 hectares more this year. This was reported by the Polish Statistical Office.
Not very flourishing market prices
The expansion of the area is striking, because the market price of potatoes (in contrast to market prices in Western Europe) has not been very good. Nearly 9 million tons of potatoes were harvested due to an above-average hectare yield.
Increased knowledge of the matter
It is not so much the area (2010 hectares in 2011 and 400.000) that has caused the rise of Polish potato cultivation in recent years. The enormous increase in knowledge in a short time and the resulting higher returns per hectare also play a role.
The influence on price formation in Western Europe will increase significantly in the coming years due to developments in potato cultivation in Poland.
