Imported 39,2 percent in May

Many potatoes intended for processing imported

June 16, 2017

As in previous months, many potatoes (destined for processing) were also imported in May. This year, no less than 39,2 percent of the total processed volume of potatoes was imported in May.

Last May, a total of 105.000 tons of potatoes were imported. That was 30,8 percent of the total volume (340.100 tons). This year, 135.200 tons have been imported. That is 39,2 percent of the total volume.

Processing
This year, 1,73 million tons of potatoes have already been processed. That is 100.000 tons more than in the period from January to May 2016. At that time, 33,6 percent (547.000 tons) came from imported potatoes. This year it is 38 percent (657.700 tons).

Despite the disappointing potato harvest in 2016, the processors on Dutch territory were able to continue to work at full capacity. This was partly due to raw materials from other countries.

Where do the potatoes come from?
It is known that many potatoes have been supplied from Poland. However, a lot has also been imported from Germany, where the potato harvest in 2016 was better than previously estimated.

The total processed potatoes for the period June 2016 to May 2017 are still close to 4 million tons. That is 200.000 tons more than in the period from June 2015 to May 2016.
