It went so well in Canada. With good growing conditions and low disease pressure, but extreme rainfall at the end of June washed away more than 400 hectares (1.000 acres) in a potato growing area in Ontario.
The damage caused by the excessive rainfall on June 22 and 23 is becoming increasingly clear, reports say AGCanada. The Orangeville and Beeton districts were hit the hardest with 139 mm (5.5 inches) and 89 mm (3.5 inches) of rain. Many other growing areas also received between 25 and 100 mm, while other places had to make do with an inch's worth of precipitation and growers complained about drought.
Deformities, growth cracks and hollowness
The heavy rain will still cause many challenges, including nitrogen leaching, phytophthora, blackleg, stem wet rot and a high risk of quality problems. Growers should take into account deformed tubers, growth cracks and hollowness.
