Second driest June

Northern French soil remains dry

11 July 2017 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The extreme heat in June has dried up the French soil considerably, according to a investigation report of the French Agreste. The shortages are particularly visible in the north and north-east of the country.

The months of March to June increased the precipitation deficit. Nationally, the temperature was 2,8 degrees above average. June 2017 will go down in the books as the second warmest month of June since 1, according to Metéo France. Only June 1900 exceeded that.

The differences in precipitation are large between the different regions in France. Hardest hit are the north with 22% less precipitation as of March 1, 2017 and the north-east with 28% less precipitation than average.

Cereal harvest interrupted
In recent days, however, the grain harvest in various parts of France had to be interrupted by heavy rain and thunderstorms. Milder weather is expected at the end of this week, after which the harvest can be resumed.
