Increased chance of phytophthora these days

13 July 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

Phytophthora was found this week in both the northeast and the Flevopolders. The situation is still calm, but there is a chance that it will change.

The prolonged drought in a large part of the Netherlands with minimal water quantities in the south-west, in particular, gives the potato blight little chance. The northeast, however, did receive regular rainfall in June. “The largest quantities of this fell mainly in the last weeks of June. In these areas the crop has been wet for a longer period of time, so there was a very definite chance of infection by phytophthora. We are now also receiving the first reports of phytophthora infestations in the northeast of the country from the market," Bayer writes.

Whoever defies fate will be punished

Being short in the Northeast
Cultivation advisor Roelof Naber in the Veenkoloniën for Delphy points out that it is important to be sharp. “There have been significant showers in this area with some regularity, but so far the damage in the field is not too bad. Exceptions; Whoever defies fate is punished. Most growers have it very well under control. And compared to last year it is nothing.” Although the pressure is less than normal, that could change. “After the weekend we will have different weather and the threat will decrease, but in the meantime there is a real chance that more infections will emerge. So it is important to sit short these days, with all those showers.”

Follow the spray schedule
The spore pressure also remains at a low level in Flevoland. “Normally, Phytophthora can be quite present in these circumstances,” says Chris Boone of Heyboer BV. “But given the few dewy nights, there has been little mold development. There is some to be found, but not much.” However, a turnaround is possible now that an average of 25 mm of precipitation fell on Wednesday and dew nights are approaching. “A longer leaf wet period can initiate development. So stick to your spraying schedule and don't be surprised, because then you'll be too late."
