Crops convert good growing weather into kilos

15 August 2017 - Niels van der Boom

The weekly trial harvesting figures from Aviko Potato and Van der Linde show that the potato crops continued to grow during week 32. With a temperature of around 20 degrees and sufficient moisture, the crops lack nothing. However, a somewhat different picture emerges.

The most recent figures from Aviko Potato show that the yield line deviates slightly from the 'trend' of the previous 2 weeks. While the gross kilos increased further in 2012, the 2017 line deviated slightly downwards. This brings the yield in week 32, across all chip potato varieties, to around 45 tons per hectare. That was almost 2012 tons in 50 and above 2014 tons in the peak year 50.

Coarse with low OWG
The percentage of 50 millimeters upward is the highest recorded by Aviko in 6 years. More than 75% is already in the size 50 millimeters upwards. Last year that was about 10% less. The underwater weight (OWG) is the lowest that Aviko has measured in 6 years. The average is just above 340 grams, which indicates that there is still potential in the crops.

Varying yield
The trial harvest figures from potato trading house Van der Linde from Emmeloord show a somewhat mixed picture. Of the 5 plots sampled, growth ranges from 15 tons to 500 kilos in 1 week. Yields also vary, from 53 to 64 tons per hectare.

Fits well
The average of these extremely variable figures amounts to 55,58 tonnes per hectare at Van der Linde. These 5 Innovator plots are already quite large. Almost 90% is in the size 50 millimeters upwards. The underwater weight is 373 on average.

The yield can easily be measured against the average. In 5 years this will amount to 54,5 tons per hectare. Especially in 2016 and 2015, the yield level was lower than it is now.
