The Belgapom Prize sends a clear signal to the world. Due to a lack of transactions, no official listing will be established. It does report things done for a bottom price. This makes it seem as if the Belgian chip potato industry is not at all waiting for potatoes off the ground.
On Friday, August 25, the Belgapom listing reports on completed cases at a level of €3 per 100 kilos for potatoes delivered from the field. A price that normally applies to production intended for the flake industry. An official quote is not set due to a lack of transactions.
Declining trend
On Tuesday, August 22, PCA still recorded a price of €4 to €5 per 100 kilos for early potatoes. The last official Belgapomp price, from August 18, was €5 per 100 kilos. The season started on August 4 with a quotation of €10 per 100 kilos. The price now stated applies to potatoes for delivery.
Factory doesn't want potatoes
Supplied potatoes at a level of €3 are a special image in the light of the Belgian potato sector. According to the NEPG figures, the Belgian potato area has increased by 5,4%. This means that growth is greatest within the EU-5. Nevertheless, chip factories in the country are not waiting for this extra product, as evidenced by the rock-bottom prices that are paid.
