Food industry driver of potato starch growth

31 August 2017 - Clarisse van der Woude

The worldwide sales opportunities for potato starch look positive. The food processing industry is extremely interested in newly developed starch types and applications, increasing the demand for such derivatives.

The global potato starch market is expected to reach a volume of 2022 million tons in 113.9, with a value of $106.64 billion. One of the reasons for this is the growing market for industrial potato starch in the Asia-Pacific region, especially in China and India.

In addition, the consumption of starch in China accounts for almost half of the starch consumption. This is partly due to the growing popularity of European-style food products.

New developments
In addition, the starch industry developed applications for the food industry that seemed unimaginable 10 or 20 years ago. This includes products for the bakery and confectionery industry, soups and sauces, ready meals, dairy products and many other processed food products.

Advantages of derivatives
Starch derivatives offer benefits that are difficult to achieve in other ways, including fat reduction, texture and taste improvement, gluten-free, et cetera. Potato starch is also said to offer health benefits. Another driver of starch demand is the trend towards natural sweeteners in the food and beverage industry.

The worldwide market for native starch is also still developing well. The expansion will take place in both food and non-food. In 2022, this market will reach a volume of more than 95 million tons.
