Only Wednesdays for now

Potato Europe cancelled: storm coming

12 September 2017 - Niels van der Boom - 31 comments

By order of the municipality of Noordoostpolder, it has been decided not to let the international potato event PotatoEurope on Wednesday 13 September take place. With an autumn storm approaching, safety may be compromised. Whether the event can take place on Thursday 14 September will be decided at a later date.

It was quite a struggle for the exhibitors to get the stands ready in the mud pool. Apart from the hefty amount of rain that fell prior to the fair, the necessary rain is also expected on the 2 fair days themselves. In addition, 'code orange' applies to Wednesday in connection with a autumn storm† The KNMI predicts heavy to very heavy wind gusts in the morning and afternoon.

Mayor decides
It is mainly the wind, which increases in strength (up to wind force 7), which threatens safety. The Wednesday edition has therefore been canceled by order of mayor Aucke van der Werff. At 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, it will be evaluated whether the fair can continue on Thursday.

A lot of water fell before the fair. There were therefore already strong doubts as to whether harvesting demonstrations could go ahead at all.

Building the stands is a huge challenge for companies. There was a 3 hour traffic jam on the supply route on Tuesday afternoon.

Catch up on Friday?
John Dust 12 September 2017
Catch up on Friday please!
G>Bunk 12 September 2017
Wise decision. There's no point in muddling through.
René 12 September 2017
Yes, catching up on Friday is better for everyone.
All visitors on 1 day will also be chaos and it is not fun for the exhibitors either.
René 12 September 2017
Yes, catch up on Friday.
All visitors on Thursday will also be chaos.
The exhibitors pay enough and also want a return, which is not possible in 1 day.
jwn 12 September 2017
Yeah, seems like a great plan, make up for the canceled Tuesday on Friday!
AvdV 12 September 2017
Then we also just add the Saturday, so nice to all foreign visitors!!!!.
But Friday is otherwise a tight plan.

Good luck making the plans!!!
Inno 12 September 2017
Don't think you have to. Have seen photos. The terrain is one big mud puddle and they keep on giving off rain. Yesterday also 1 mm there and it was already wet

Friday as a catch-up day seems fine to me

Better to catch up in two weeks I think.
Jan 13 September 2017
I was surprised that a fair with so much preparation, the whole season and especially the last 2 weeks, still a considerable investment, is only held on 2 days. Who decides this? All the effort that companies, including foreign ones, take, all the people, machines that are brought in from far and wide and sat for 2 days.
It now appears that this limited time span increases the weather risk even more.

Of course Friday is a good run-out, but the organization doesn't seem to want or be able to do that. The logic is also missing here.
If exhibitors don't want to stand for a day longer, can they still leave? But most will, given the investments, still give an extra day a chance.

An extra trading day on Friday is not an option, I was told. This is because of the enormous organization behind it. The trading hours will be extended on Thursday, if it goes ahead. From 8 to 8.

Sorry realist. I spoke with the exhibition organization. Some of the machines will be loaded on Friday to leave for other trade fairs and demonstrations. When loading, they don't want an audience and that doesn't fit the site. Therefore, no fair will be organized on Friday.

To compensate, the site will open earlier and close later on Thursday.

The organization has made big mistakes. You can't help that it's windy, but for the rest they don't have it for each other.

The organization is in the hands of DLG, a German club. These have already let it run in the 4 100 years ago. And now in the same location they do it again. Not suitable terrain, starting too late with the construction, supply and removal of things and people is a drama. There is no communication and the damage is very large.

They waited too long with building up and after the rain they went to place the stuff so that the entire site was already destroyed before it could start.

As exhibitors, we should no longer want this. If this organization continues to arrange this, we simply should not want to stand there anymore. It costs a lot of money and effort from people without any result. Moreover, a very bad image for the Dutch potato sector.

We have to pull the plug with this club and also with this location. There are plenty of better alternatives.

Agree with exhibitor

The trade fair organization DLG has known for 4 years that they have to organize the outdoor trade fair Potato in September 2017. Such a long preparation time is unprecedented in event land, so everything could have been prepared down to the last detail, including good infrastructure for construction traffic, visitor footpaths, tractors and tippers. Plus a bad weather scenario (rain, thunder, storm).

With the right measures, investments and competent trade fair organization, an outdoor trade fair can also take place in bad weather.

Just look at the Groentechniek Holland fair, which is now open to the public in Biddinghuizen and looks neat. Same precipitation figures, almost the same place, the same surface (clay), more machines and more small tents.

So it is possible! A shame for the exhibitors who have been duped for millions of euros as a result.

The drainage and drainage is perfectly arranged on 70% of the plots in this polder. Why is this event going to 1 of those poorly maintained lots of the school farm? A very bad advertisement for this beautiful polder, and for the entire Dutch potato sector.

boy

what a stupid talk. be happy that there are inventors who produce machines with which you can earn money as a farmer. with your level this won't work.
sjonnie gets it 13 September 2017
he certainly has a point here. you always get there keep sticking there always a thick margin we as a farmer can't stick anything on anything are paid below everything and have to dock everything ourselves penny 16. don't know if you should be happy with all those machines were better they never existed it went a bit smaller and more difficult because of which the prices would have been much better you can also see it differently you do cause these prices with those far too large and too expensive machines
visitor 13 September 2017
people beware! the exhibition organization indicates that there may be harvesting demonstrations. but that's an empty promise. it is such a mess and dredging gang that people have known for a long time that this is not going to happen. they only do it to lure the visitors. to make things even worse.

just massively scrap the machines and look for an ox to plow. The donkeys that have to follow are active on this forum so we have already found them.......

That scholarship will be a sausage to me, my own potatoes I have more to worry about. I'm fine staying at home.
Pierre 14 September 2017
What do you have to worry about, it grows enormously with this rain. Kilo's are going to be very easy, nice and coarse.
Moreover, the rain will stop next week and we can expect good weather for about 6 weeks for harvesting.

Drent 14 September 2017
They grow enormously with this weather, man most are already dead except for a single plot. As soon as the weather changes, we will start storing, so I don't want to wait with harvesting because they are still too green.
Inno 14 September 2017
Ploeger and avr were just digging up, I saw. Still went well. Won't be long because there's a storm coming again
